Mama’s handy guide on how to use oils on children.
In general, kids, especially babies, are very delicate. You need to be very careful and cautious when it comes to them. Here’s a quick guide on how you can use oils with your kids.
HOW TO USE OILS
- TOPICAL
When it comes to the kiddos, start slowly on the bottoms of their feet then gradually test on other areas for sensitivity. For topical applications, place drops of oil into a bowl, a roller, or on your hand. And always dilute when applying oil to an infant.
- AROMATIC
Did you know that inhaling essential oils has a direct effect on the hypothalamus aka our brain’s control center? It’s this part of the brain that sends instructions to our body. Diffusing is an easy and excellent way to purify the air where your kids stay and uplift their mood.
BABIES 1-DAY OLD to 2 YRS. OLD
For babies this small, Young Living suggests to use only ⅛ the labeled concentration of all oils.
OILS TO AVOID: Eucalyptus, Basil, Peppermint, Juniper, Hyssop, and Wintergreen
USE GENTLER OILS LIKE: Copaiba, Peace & Calming, Myrtle, Ravintsara, Cedarwood, Frankincense, Lemon, and Lavender
Take caution when wearing or diffusing strong smelling oils when the babies are around. They have very fragile skin and are usually sensitive to the potency of some oils. One way to manage the oil’s intense potency is by diluting the oil with some carrier oil or putting on feet. Diffuse on intermittent setting.

KIDS 2 to 6 YEARS OLD
Use only ¼ the labeled concentration of all oils for babies 2 to 6 year old. All essential oils for this age group must be diluted. As a rule of thumb, you can follow the 1:30 blend which simply means one part of the essential oil and 30 parts of the carrier oil.
KIDS 7 to 11 YEARS OLD
Young Living suggests to use only ½ the labeled concentration of all oils for children in this age group. What’s more, kids this age can start using their own blends after you have taught them about oil safety, of course, like applying diluted oils to the feet first.
KIDS 12 YEARS OLD and above
For the older children, full labeled concentration of all oils is suggested. At this age, they should already know about oil safety especially if they have been using oils at home.
